III) Institutes

f) The Institute for Cultures Indigenous to the Sudan

The Institute for Cultures Indigenous to the Sudan forms to a certain extent a parallel to the Institute for Cultural Pluralism and Intercultural Communication, yet it is to be focused on the area of the Sudan, the cultures indigenous to it and the cultural-pluralistic coexistence within the country. Correspondingly it will be supervised by the Humanities Faculty, one of its goals being interdisciplinary work across boundaries of the faculties.

This institute has the job of studying and supporting cultures indigenous to the Sudan through the cooperation of humanities and other interested scholars from other faculties. For the most part empirical methods should be applied.

Research foci on the various cultural circles can be located in the following disciplines:

  • Cultural sciences
  • Anthropology
  • Ethnology and folklore
  • Linguistics and literary studies
  • Gender research
  • Sociology and political science
  • Geography
  • History
  • Archaeology
  • Interdisciplinary projects should also play a role.

In addition to motivating and accompanying research projects the Institute should also be an advocate for strengthening public awareness of the cultures indigenous to the country. The activities of the Institute should serve the maintenance and development of culture as well as peaceful coexistence among the different ethnic groups and the reinforcement of cultural identity and plurality. It should also examine cultural life in Sudan through its representation in the media as well as marketing cultures in the area of tourism.

Through organizing lectures, seminars, workshops and colloquia with persons from research, politics and culture in Sudan and abroad a network will be established in which institutions of the Nihal European University in Sudan pursue common research goals with public and private institutions.

In cooperating with Sudanese cultural institutions the Institute should promote a cultural renaissance. With its work it will also make it possible for Nihal European University in Sudan to contribute to the cultural offering in the region of Khartoum.
