Concept – Part C: Educational Principles and the Profile of the Nihal European University in Sudan
II) The Profile of the Nihal European University in Sudan
The Nihal European University in Sudan is planned as a private university established according to Sudanese law which orients itself on European standards and the Bologna criteria. It should ideally be constructed as a campus-based university in the catchment area. Negotiations with the Sudanese government for an appropriate piece of land (ideally with a total area of 200 ha) will take place in July / August 2007. However it would also be possible to establish a university infrastructure on existing properties, though buildings too close to one another would preclude a campus-like structure. Nonetheless the basic plan for the Nihal European University in Sudan corresponds to an architectural philosophy based on a larger piece of property.
In addition to facilities for research, teaching and administration a long-term building plan will have to include the construction of apartments for faculty, employees and guests as well as student dormitories and buildings for cultural, artistic and athletic activities.
In the first phase of construction the Nihal European University in Sudan will be divided into three faculties. At the end of this phase it is should be able to accommodate 3,620 students in the 14 academic disciplines provisionally planned.
In addition to its interdisciplinary and praxis-oriented centres and institutes (the Language Learning Institute, the Institute for Journalism, Media Practice and Communication, the Institute for Cultural Pluralism and Intercultural Communication, the Institute for Cultures Indigenous to the Sudan, the Institute for Environmental and Resource Management, the Institute for Teacher Education and the Coaching Academy), the university will also offer a broad spectrum of continuing education options for interested persons from beyond the university. In this way individual entities within the institutes and centres might be able to provide course offerings for advanced training and certification purposes.
