b) The Broadcasting Plan of Radio Nihal

The broadcasting plan for this campus radio station should be committed to the following basic ideas:

  • Radio Nihal as a Training Site for Radio Journalism:
Radio Nihal should make its name in the framework of the curriculum as a workshop site for praxis. Students should be taught basic skills in professional radio. Besides journalistic skills, technical and aesthetic competence should be taught as well.
  • Radio Nihal as a Living Local Forum:
Radio Nihal should be open and create free spaces. It should offer information related to life in order to make culture realizable. The coming together of various cultures and religions should be promoted, so that common dialogue can take place.
  • Radio Nihal as a Media Pedagogical Field for Experimentation:
Radio Nihal should experiment creatively with forms. In contrast to products of current radio journalism, characterised by standardisation, fragmentation, aesthetisation and medial exaggeration, Radio Nihal should create a sort of laboratory situation in which one can dedicate oneself intensively to topics, realising these creatively.
  • Radio Nihal as an Interface between University and Media:
Open access should be afforded students of all faculties and universities. Through the preparation of academic topics and the connection to practical experience, education and training will achieve a complementary synergy.
  • Radio Nihal as Internet Radio:
In order to achieve a degree of dissemination as well as providing students with the possibility to obtain experience with the Internet, Radio Nihal should likewise be available as Internet radio.
The Internet radio station should also offer the possibilities of live broadcasting of concerts as well as daily programming on the Internet. Beyond that the Internet presence should be more than an archive of programmes; it can offer specific academic content. Günther Friesinger (philosophy, freelance media specialist, artist and curator at the University of Vienna)* has developed a project called “The Virtual University”. On the one hand it offers recordings and digitalisations of lectures; on the other it provides a live stream of such courses. In addition the Internet radio station should be included in the Project “AudioLectureLib” in order to be able to prepare better the audio contents of the lectures.
